Synopsis: Students who have completed this unit will have gained an understanding of the history, theory and practice of social work internationally. This unit introduces some of the key issues in international social work and develops students' knowledge of approaches, models and practice methods that can be used in this field.

Objectives: At the completion of this unit students should: 1. demonstrate an understanding of the organisation of social work internationally; 2. understand and be able to debate social work's response to globalization; 3. identify and critically analyze some of the key issues in international social work such as poverty alleviation, local level social development, conflict and post-conflict reconstruction and forced migration; 4. demonstrate an understanding of some of the main theoretical perspectives underpinning the practice of international social work; and 5. demonstrate knowledge of practice methods that are used in the international social work field.

Assessment: One essay (2000 words): 40% + Exam (2500 words): 60%

Contact Hours: Singapore students will be required to attend tutorials at TMC three hours per week and will receive the course book. This subject is one of two bridging subjects for Polytechnic students who have completed a three-year diploma and want to undertake the Bachelor of Social Work degree.

Off-campus attendance requirements: Students in Australia can undertake this subject off-campus and will receive the course book that includes exercises, assessment tasks and reading materials for 12 weeks study and they will be encouraged to participate in on-line discussion groups.
