STA3217

Applied statistics 3 ( 6 points, SCA Band 2, 0.125 EFTSL)

Undergraduate
(SCI)

Leader: Associate Professor P R Rayment

Offered:
Not offered in 2005.

Synopsis: The unit covers: Section A: Further topics in design and analysis of experiments, building on unit STA2216: power analysis for analysis of variance (ANOVA); fixed, random and mixed effects models for ANOVA; nested designs; analysis of repeated measures experiments. Section B: Introduction to multivariate data analysis techniques - graphical display of multivariate data, representation and condensation of multivariate data, Hotelling's T-squared test, discriminant analysis; principal components and their use in data condensation; analysis of contingency tables and log-linear models, logistic regression analysis and its relationship to log-linear models.

Objectives: On completion of this unit students will be able to critically use a range of methods of univariate and multivariate analysis which are frequently applied to the analysis of both interval-scale and categorical data in the environmental, biological, biomedical and other fields; formulate statistical models for a range of archetypal investigations including comparative experiments in particular; demonstrate an understanding of the assumptions required for valid application of the methods covered; effectively utilise appropriate statistical software to implement the analyses and check the underlying assumptions; correctly interpret the computer generated results of data analyses.

Assessment: Assignments (two): 30% + Examination (three hours): 70%

Contact Hours: Twelve hours per week including (for on-campus students) three hours of lectures and one 1-hour tutorial/computing workshop

Prerequisites: MTH2246 or STA2216
