The Spanish American 'Boom' of Literature ( 6 points, SCA Band 1, 0.125 EFTSL)

Synopsis: This unit studies the main works of narrative produced in Latin America since 1955, and the basic principles of literary theory affecting Latin American writers OF THAT TIME (ie magical realism, mythology and cultural studies). Special emphasis will be placed on the study of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and his masterpiece Cien anos de soledad, and their place in L.A and world literature in the 20th century. This unit is taught and assessed in Spanish.

Assessment: Two take-home exams (1000 words in Spanish): 40% + Oral presentation (1000 words): 20% + Final essay (1500 words in Spanish): 40%
