Synopsis: AS for SPN1060

Objectives: 1. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the most important periods in the history of Spain and Latin America. 2. Describe the influence of Roman, Moorish, Christian and Jewish cultures on the formation of Spanish culture and identity. 3. Explain the major debates about nationhood which have shaped notions of Spanish culture. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of the causes of the Spanish Civil War and how pre-war ideological debates shaped the Franco dictatorship. 5. Describe and assess the changes which Spanish society has undergone since the death of Franco and the return to democracy. 6. Compare and contrast European discourses of discovery concerning Latin America and judge how they may have shaped European colonisation in Latin America. 7. Describe and understand the formation of pre-Columban societies and explain why Spanish colonisation was so successful. 8. Have a general understanding of the sociopolitical structures in Colonial Latin America. 9. Explain the internal and external factors which led to Latin American independence from Spain. 10. Compare the development of different Latin American countries in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and assess the factors which have led to uneven development or underdevelopment. 11. Explore the relationship between Spanish and Latin American literature, painting, film and the societies which produced these "texts". 12. Understand and apply techniques of reading and analysing historical documents and literary texts in Spanish. 13. Have a general understanding of the major debates within Hispanism and how these engage with Hispanic cultural production.

Assessment: 2 tests (equivalent to 1350 words): 30% + Exam (equivalent to 1350 words): 30% + 2 class presentations (equivalent to 675 words): 15% + 3 language-culture exercises (equivalent to 1125 words): 25%
