Representing the Holocaust: Popular Culture, Literature and Memory ( 6 points, SCA Band 1, 0.125 EFTSL)

Synopsis: The Nazi's attempted genocide raises crucial historical, socio-political, ethical and psychological questions. Since these events, the Holocaust has been a major arena for cultural reflection, metaphysical scrutiny and political appropriation. Three categories of post-war depictions of the Holocaust will be examined as contested sites of remembrance and representation: film, fiction and oral histories. These will be analysed in relation to theoretical debates about representation. Attention will be paid to the way in which representation and remembrance is socially, culturally, politically and historically embedded.

Assessment: Essay (3000 words): 65% + Seminar presentation (1000 words): 25% + Written summary (500 words): 10% + Third-year students will be invited to show a greater degree of theoretical reflexivemess in their assignments.
