Gippsland Second semester 2005 (OCL)
Synopsis: Students will be introduced to feminist critiques of malestream sociological perspectives, their theoretical and conceptual frameworks and methods of inquiry, and to alternative feminist approaches which can inform a sociology for women. Issues of class, culture and race will be considered. The second part of the subject will focus on doing a women's sociology and the application of a feminist perspective to understanding women's lives in contemporary society.
Assessment: Two assignments (1350 and 1800 words): 30% and 40% + Seminar presentation/paper (1350 words): 30% Students at third-year level will be required to demonstrate wider reading for all three pieces of assessment. The second assignment requires a broader knowledge base and a more strongly theoretical approach than that set for second-level students.
Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week
Prerequisites: Two second-year sociology units
