Synopsis: The contribution of unconscious processes to interpersonal interactions will be expolored in this unit. The processes decribed in various psychoanalytic approaches to human behaviour have been incorporated into sociological theorising and research. These will be examined with particular attention to their applications to analyses of interactions in the family and organisations. Their utility in understanding contemporary poltical and social movements will also be considered.
Assessment: Essay (2000 words): 40% + Class project (1000 words): 20% + Test (1.5 hours): 40% + Third-year students will be required to critically evaluate theoretical issues in their assignments.
Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour seminar) per week
Prerequisites: First year sequence in Sociology or equivalent
