Caulfield Second semester 2005 (Day)
Synopsis: The following topics will be examined: historical development of punishment and penal institutions; remand, trial and imprisonment; the effects of isolation and deprivation; prison populations and social class; resocialisation and techniques of coping in a total institution; deterrence and rehabilitation; parole; release; recidivism; reform; alternatives; privatisation; unit management and specific therapeutic communities.
Assessment: Essay (2500 words): 50% + Examination (2 hours): 50% + Third year students will be expected to show a greater depth of critical analysis.
Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week
Prerequisites: A first-year sequence in Sociology or permission
