Synopsis: This unit is the second in the first year introductory sociology sequence, building on the skills and knowledge developed in first semester. It introduces students to three important areas of sociological research and theoretical endeavour: i) sexuality and gender, the social construction of the genders and gender inequality; ii) popular culture, through an examination of mass media, popular music, hegemonic idealogies and public spaces; iii) class and social inequality in Australian society.
Assessment: Two tutorial exercises: 20% + Written project report (2000 words): 40% + Examination (2 hours): 40%
Contact Hours: 3 hours (2 x 1 hour lectures and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week
