Synopsis: An introduction to sociological ways of thinking about social life and an exploration of the ways individuals can be located in social and cultural contexts. The application of sociological approaches to contemporary social issues and controversies. Three topics will provide the framework for this introduction: the sociological imagination and the understanding of individuals in social/cultural context; families and households; deviance and social control.
Assessment: Short written assignment (500 words): 10% + Three tutorial tests (40 mins each): 40% + Examination (2 hours): 50%
Contact Hours: 3 hours (2 x 1 hour lectures and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week
