Rethinking Received Ideas in Social Welfare ( 12 points, SCA Band 1, 0.250 EFTSL)

Synopsis: This unit provides students with a thorough grounding in the design of practice-based research. Common conceptual and methodological issues associated with research are reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on an examination of both the intrumental and moral bases of social welfare research. The end and means of social welfare research in general and students' specific research priorities are interrogated.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to: 1. Identify an area of social welfare theory or practice in need of investigation; 2. Plan a program of research; 3. Evaluate the moral implications of the research to be conducted; 4. Articulate and address personal learning objectives; 5. Demonstrate a capacity to comprehend, analyse and articulate key themes and arguments in the relevant literature.

Assessment: Learning contract (1000 words): 10% + Discussion paper (3500 words): 40% + Research proposal (4500 words): 50%
