Family Centred Practice: Critical Issues ( 12 points, SCA Band 1, 0.250 EFTSL)

Synopsis: The unit offers close study of contemporary developments in approaches to family centred practice - psychodynamic, solution focused and integrative. The critical practice concerns of alcohol and drug abuse, mental illness, divorce, violence and sexual abuse are studied within the contexts of cultural, community and organisational settings, and specific client populations. Students are encouraged to continue their exploration of the impact of their own family on their professional and personal life experiences and to integrate this knowledge into professional family centred practice.

Objectives: n successful completion of the subject, students will be able to: 1. Use professional knowledge in their practice, to articulate a framework for thinking about practice issues and to develop and implement a research project. 2. Students should demonstrate competent professional skills with a number of substantive practice concerns such as mental illness. 3. Students will develop skills in working with the issues of commitment, sexuality and marriage in family relationships, and will identify and apply professional values of research in practice, and the differential use of self in the expanded therapeutic alliance in family centred practice, supervision, consultation and continuing education.

Assessment: Literature review (2000 words): 25% + Presentation (30 minutes) and Report (1,000 words): 25% + Project (4500 words): 50%
