Scientific methodologies and research techniques ( 6 points, SCA Band 2, 0.125 EFTSL)

Synopsis: This unit will assist students to undertake scientific research by providing practical and theoretical training in planning, undertaking and documenting scientific research projects. It will cover an appreciation of the 'scientific method', as well as key issues in the scientific workplace, including safety, ethics and intellectual property. Teamwork and communication skills will also be developed. Potential future areas of research will be described through a series of guest lectures on recent advances in science. The unit is normally only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science Advanced with Honours course, or by invitation of the Faculty of Science.

Assessment: Final examination (2 hours): 30% + In-class tests: 20% + Group presentation and tutorial participation: 10% + Project plan, report and presentation: 40% + Students must pass the project component to pass the unit overall.

Contact Hours: Two 1-hour lectures per week and one 2-hour tutorial per week
