Synopsis: The unit introduces strategic planning in an urban and regional planning context. Conceptualising strategic planning as an activity aimed at developing long-term objectives and directions for urban development, it will also emphasize the inclusion of fairness of process, sustainability and equity of outcomes. The unit focuses on practical methods and implementation, and through a broad range of readings, practical exercises and project work will develop an understanding of the basic tenets of strategic planning, i.e. an integrated approach to planning inclusive of economic, environmental and social dimensions, involving a balanced and visionary approach to land use and transport.

Objectives: 1. Students will develop an understanding of the multi-faceted , and integrated nature of strategic planning. 2. Students will be exposed to planning discourses and public debates on urban planning and, more specifically, will explore existing tensions between community expectations, development industry desiderata and planning framework imperatives. 3. Students will learn to differentiate between ad-hoc, localised approaches to strategic planning and inclusive, integrative and holistic systems combining local and state planning schemes. 4. Students will be introduced to principles of planning (standards, database management for planning and socio-economic surveys, data analysis) urban design and conservation (urban design theory, urban forms) planning for urban utilities (waste disposal, water management, storm water) population, demography and urbanisation (demographic analysis, settlement systems and histories

Assessment: Essay (2000 words): 40%; Project brief: (500 words): 10%; Group Project: (2000 words) 50%.
