Synopsis: An introduction to Russian Realism of the 19th century through the study of literary texts in a comparative perspective (with French and English literatures). The relationship of the theory of realism, as represented in the manifestos of the French and Russian 'physiologists', will form the general philosophical background to the discussions. All texts are studied in English.
Assessment: Class project (1,500 words): 30% + Essay (2000 words): 40% + Test (1 hour): 30%
Contact Hours: 2.5 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1.5 hour seminar) per week
