Synopsis: This unit provides an understanding of the scientific principles underpinning magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), its associated instrumentation and protocols, positioning methods and biological protection principles. Physics/imaging topics include: the physical elements of magnetic resonance, the physics of magnetic resonance imaging, experimental and design considerations, commonly used pulsed sequences in MRI and advanced topics in MRI. MRI methods topics include: technological considerations in clinical MRI, clinical MRI of the central nervous system (brain and spine), musculoskeletal imaging (shoulder, hip, knee and ankle), MRI of the abdomen and pelvis and vascular applications of MRI.

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to: 1. demonstrate an understanding of the scientific principles, biological protection and dosimetry, quality assurance and control, technological characteristics and relevant applications of magnetic resonance medical imagine systems; 2. recognise and describe the normal anatomy, physiology and common pathological appearances of magnetic resonance images of the head and neck, spine, thoracic and abdominal regions and extremities of the head and neck, thoracic and abdominal regions and extremities; 3. describe the relevant protocols, positioning and methods employed in magnetic resonance imaging procedures of the head and neck, spine, thoracic and abdominal regions, and related interventional procedures; 4. critically appraise and analyse technical and clinical issues associated with the production of magnetic resonance images; and 5. describe and apply a range of advanced digital image processing tools for both qualitative and quantitative image analysis used in this imaging mode.

Assessment: Examination (3 hours):50% + Written assignments (2x imaging, 2x methods): 50%
