Synopsis: This unit will focus on professional practice in the workplace. It will: (a) extend and consolidate students' existing skills and knowledge in managing oneself in a professional manner in an organised and culturally diverse environment; (b) develope an awareness and understanding of the range of ways in which work can be organised and carried out in contemporary workplaces including teams and contracted work; (c) develop a sensitivity to ethical practice, gender and cultural differences, equity and equal opportunity in the workplace; and (d) develop an understanding of the range of legislation which governs work practices on the part of both employer and employee.
Assessment: Reflective exercise (equivalent to 1,000 words): 20% + Group simulation exercise (equivalent to 1,500 words when written up for submission): 30% + Research project (equivalent to 2,000 words): 50%
Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 2 hour seminar) per week
