Synopsis: As for PLM4520. Students devise their own research question (in consultation with the lecturer). In researching the essay they engage in substantive research using both primary and secondary materials, and show an awareness of relevant conceptual frameworks.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate the ability to: 1. Show their comprehension of the many ways in which theories of international politics shape, and are shaped by, political philosophy, both classical and modern. 2. Demonstrate their knowledge of a range of theories in international relations, including Kantian and noe-Kantian Theories, Critical Theories, Postmodernist Theories and Feminist Theories. 3. Show their knowledge of the subject but also demonstrate how the theoretical concepts intrinsic to that knowledge apply, or fail to apply, to 'the real world' of international politics.

Assessment: Essay (6000 words): 50% + Examination (3 hours): 50%
