Physiology of respiration and sleep ( 6 points, SCA Band 2, 0.125 EFTSL)

Synopsis: How the body maintains adequate gas exchange and ventilatory control during health and disease. Advanced knowledge of sleep physiology including the stages of sleep, changes of motor control, respiration and EEG as they relate to sleep and classification of sleep disorders. Effect of aging on respiration and sleep. The subject will be presented though involvement of students in lectures, practical classes and assignments. There will a strong emphasis on clinical laboratory techniques that are commonly used in hospital lung function laboratories and sleep laboratories.

Assessment: Mid semester MCQ: 10% + Essay (1,550 words): 15% + End of semester exam: 40% + Project oral presentation: 10% + Project written report (2,000 words): 20% + Assessment of laboratory/project work: 5%

Contact Hours: Three lectures and three hours of practical/tutorial work per week

Prerequisites: PHY2021 and PHY3171
