Philosophy of Art ( 6 points, SCA Band 1, 0.125 EFTSL)

Undergraduate
(ARTS)

Leader: Dr John Armstrong

Offered:
Not offered in 2005.

Synopsis: This unit examines two of the most profound and most puzzling of human questions: 'What is art?' and 'Why is art important (if it is)?' In addressing these questions we have to face the fact that, in our time, there is no clear and generally accepted definition of 'art' - what are the implications of this? Traditionally, art is regarded as one of the great human achievements - and many people continue to agree in principle with this assessment. But it has proved remarkably difficult to provide a convincing and detailed elucidation of the value of art. And this task will occupy us in the later section of the unit.
