Clayton First semester 2005 (Day)
Synopsis: The unit is intended to provide an elementary survey of modern symbolic logic, concentrating on the propositional and predicate logic. Besides developing a basic competence in these systems, the subject provides an introduction to the meta-theory of formal systems and involves some discussion of philosophical problems associated with the application of such systems to informal discourse. www.arts.monash.edu.au/phil/undergraduate/lateryear.html
Assessment: Three assignments (1500 word equivalent): 90% + Tutorial participation: 10% + Students may also choose to sit a 3-hour examination to replace the combined total of their (combined) assignment scores if this will improve their mark.
Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 lecture and 1 tutorial) per week.
Prerequisites: First-year sequence in Philosophy or at least 12 points of Science units.
