Introduction to aeromedical retrieval ( 6 points, SCA Band 2, 0.125 EFTSL)

Synopsis: The student is provided with an understanding of the context of aeromedical retrieval through consideration of the role of Air Ambulance and other retrieval systems together with tier operational functions. The role of members of the flight team will be explored. Fixed wing and rotary wing aerodynamics are introduced. The unit will emphasise, in detail, specific safety and regulatory requirements. Preparation for flight will cover the on-ground care and pre-flight checks of patients and preparing self for flight. The response of the body to flight will be introduced and form the basis for considering the modifications to practice required for the in-flight management of patients.

Objectives: On completion of this unit, the student should demonstrate: 1. A knowledge of aeromedical and ground retrieval services in Victoria and Australia and their interrelationships; 2. A knowledge and understanding of the safety requirements for operating with fixed and rotary wing aircraft; 3. A knowledge and understanding of relevant Civil Aviation Safety Authority regulations; 4. A knowledge and understanding of airport terminals and the transfer environments in aeromedical retrievals; 5. A knowledge and understand of flight team responsibilites, the student's specific role and relevant clinical, administrative and communication requirements; 6. A knowledge and understanding of how to undertake a safe and effective patient transfer that incorporates risk analysis and prevention strategies; 7. A practical understanding of the aviation concepts of fixed and rotary wing aircraft; 8. A preliminary understanding of physical and psychological effects of flight on the body. 9. An ability to identify factors that may affect the student's fitness for flight; 10. A familiarity with the type and use of medical equipment utilised in the care of patients during flight; 11. An ability to adapt patient care practices to the aeromedical retrieval environment taking into consideration the effects of flight on specific medical and surgical problems related to the professional practice level of the student.

Assessment: Examination 30%, Worksheets 40%, Short reports 30%.

Prerequisites: Paramedics, Registered Nurses and doctors who are employees of public or private aeromedical retrieval providers or with an interest in retrieval medicine. Ambulance participants are required to be qualified Ambulance or MICA Paramedics with a minimum of 12 months post qualification experience, currently employed by either Rural Ambulance Victoria, the Metropolitan Ambulance Service, an interstate ambulance service or a private aeromedical provider. Registered Nurse participants are required to have current registration as a Division 1 nurse or equivalent, with a minimum of 12 months post registration experience. Doctor participants are required to be qualified with current full Medical Practitioner registration in Victoria or equivalent.
