Synopsis: Health teaching and health promotion are essential aspects of the role of the Registered Nurse. This unit explores educative and motivational processes as an integral part of nursing practice and professional development. Students gain an understanding of these processes in the context of their own work situations.

Objectives: On completion of this unit, the student is expected to be able to: 1. discuss the role of the nurse in health teaching and promotion; 2. critically evaluate learning theories, principles and concepts, and their application to health teaching and promotion activities; 3. identify factors which influence the health teaching and promotion process; 4. discuss factors to be considered when developing health education and promotion programs for individual, groups and vulnerable populations; 5. develop health education and health promotion programs; 6. demonstrate the appropriate application of teaching methods, strategies and aids; and 7. develop tools for evaluating the effectiveness of health education and health promotion programs.
