Chief Practical Study VI ( 6 points, SCA Band 1, 0.125 EFTSL)

Synopsis: Students prepare for a repertoire performance on their chief instrument of a program of works from at least two historical periods or prepare a folio of a negotiated composition project with learning objectives identified jointly by the student and teacher. Students submit a weekly journal to their teachers for assessment of their progress. The journal includes a summary of the salient concepts and techniques that help inform their weekly practice. The unit is taught through a combination of individual lessons, small group consultations and instrumental workshops. Students are required to take part, with full attendance, in an ensemble or composition workshop as a hurdle requirement.

Objectives: By the end of the semester, students will demonstrate a thorough understanding of research-based performance and a high level of technical skill. Students will have studied a body of suitable repertoire including a work by an Australian composer.

Assessment: Participation in an approved ensemble or composition workshop as a hurdle requirement + Written (2400 words): 35% + Practical performance examination or a composition folio: 65%

Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 1 hour individual lesson and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week
