Synopsis: This unit deals with musical, aesthetic, social and ritual concepts and practices as expressed in the musical life of the Chinese, Japanese and Korean cultures, with particular reference to selected performances of music and dance and the relationships between music and the related arts.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit, students should have: 1. A basic knowledge of the history and styles of the music cultures of China, Korea, and Japan. 2. A knowledge of music theory, terminology, and performance techniques in the three cultures and how they reflect local socio/cultural patterns and values.

Assessment: Written (2000 words): 40% + Analysis assignment (500 words): 30% + Examination (2 hours): 30%
