Synopsis: The unit deals with music, aesthetic, social and ritual concepts and practices as expressed in the musical life of North and South India with particular reference to selected performances of music and dance, the relationships between music and the related arts.

Objectives: Upon completion of this unit, students undertaking this unit should have: 1. A basic knowledge of the history and styles of the music cultures of North and South India. 2. A knowledge of music theory, terminology, and performance techniques in North and South India and how they reflect local socio/cultural patterns and values.

Assessment: Written (2000 words): 40% + Analysis assignment (500 words): 30% + Examination (2 hours): 30%
