Clayton Second semester 2005 (Day)
Synopsis: The unit covers traditional counterpoint, Schenkerian analysis, and the twelve-tone system. Students learn to write species counterpoint and atonal music, and examine the multi-layered harmonic structure of tonal music.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit, students will have broadened their knowledge of music theory, analysis and composition. Students will be able to understand principles of tonal counterpoint, conduct Schenkerian analyses of short tonal works, and compose twelve-tone studies.
Assessment: Twelve-tone composition: 20% + Counterpoint group assignment: 10% + Schenkerian analysis group assignment: 10% + Examination (2 hours): 60%
Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 2 hour lecture) per week
