Synopsis: Students prepare for a technical examination performance on their chief instrument based on a prescribed repertoire of technical requirements. Students submit a weekly journal to their teachers for assessment of their progress. The jounral includes a summary of the salient concepts and techniques that help inform their weekly practice. The unit is taught through a combination of individual workshops, small group consultations and instrumental workshops. Students present the weekly journals in a final assignment to the School in the last week of semester. Students as required to take part, with full attendance, in an ensemble or composition workshop as a hurdle requirement.
Objectives: By the end of the semester, students will have gained an initial understanding of research-based performance. It is expected that students will master the required body of technical work as set out in the technical syllabus for the relevant instrument and demonstrate the basic skills in pitch, rhythm, sound production and style.
Assessment: Participation in an approved ensemble or composition workshop as a hurdle requirement + Written (2400 words): 35% + Practical performance examination or a composition folio: 65%
Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 1 hour individual lesson and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week
Prerequisites: Admission by audition.
