Synopsis: A mathematical research project chosen from a range of areas of mathematics and statistics, including astrophysics, dynamics, chaos, computing algorithm design, number theory, logic and meteorology.

Objectives: On completion of this unit students will have seen and developed applications of mathematics which go beyond what is possible in most mathematics units. Students will appreciate the power of mathematics; have learned research skills including accessing the existing literature, analysing data, developing and checking mathematical models; be able to use data collections both in the library and on the Internet; develop their communication skills by presenting an oral report on their work; gain experience in the use of technical word processing packages and graphics software.

Assessment: Project report: 80% + Progress reports: 10% + Oral presentation: 10%
