Synopsis: Composite benefits and applications. Resins and fibres. Composite manufacture. Elasticity and stress analysis. Strength, modulus and Poisson's ratio of undirectional composites. Orientation dependence. Short fibre composites. Laminate theory. Toughness of composites. Characteristisation of composites and their performance. Multiphase polymer materials; thermodynamics of blending, properties of polymer blends and foamed polymers; production and properties of structural foams. Orientated polymers.

Assessment: Examination: 40% + Case study reports and assignments: 60%
Contact Hours: 12 hours per week and a two-day (16 hour) residential workshop
