Undergraduate
(ENG)

Leader: G H Edward

Offered:
Clayton First semester 2005 (Day)
Clayton Second semester 2005 (Day)

Synopsis: This unit will examine the mechanics of deformation of solid and plastic materials and fluids. The materials studied include metals, ceramics and polymers. Topics include yield criteria in metals, polymers and the effects of multiaxial stress states, the power law representation of (isothermal) stress/strain/strain-uniaxial tension, the effect of work hardening on strain gradient and cold drawing in polymers. The control and evolution of polycrystalline texture during deformation processing of metals, and process induced anisotropy in polymers will also be discussed. The flow of viscous fluids as an example of a time and rate-dependent deformation will be studied.

Assessment: Examination: 60% + Assignments: 25% + Test: 15%
