Synopsis: Normal and shear stress. Mohr's circle in two dimensions. Stress on a plane of arbitrary orientation. Invariants of stress and strain. Equations of equilibrium and compatibility. Hooke's law. Superposition and St Venant's principle. Von Mises and Tresca theories of yield. Heat transfer. Steady state conduction. Overall heat transfer coefficients. Non-steady state conduction: lumped systems, convection b.c.s, transient time. Finite difference methods. Convection. Radiation. Thermally induced residual stress. Casting and forging. Injection moulding of polymers. Hot rolling of steels.
