Clinical research in radiography ( 12 points, SCA Band 2, 0.250 EFTSL)

Synopsis: This unit will offer students a portfolio of research projects designed around the following themes: Detection and Evaluation of Disease; Health Service and Patient Care; Evidence Based Practice in Radiography; Imaging Science and Quality Assurance. To facilitate the achievment by students of the objectives created for the unit, will be divided into 4 modules: Module 1: Research Design and Management Issues; Module 2: Literature Review; Module 3: The Investigation and Modul 4: Analysing and Communicating the Results.

Objectives: Upon completion of this unit, students will have gained significant knowledge and understanding of the research process; an increased capacity to critically appraise the literature; a capacity to apply research findings to their clinical practice; a capacity to communicate research findings to the wider community; and an enhance capacity to extend the critical, ethical and creative research stance to their everyday clinical practice. On successful completion of this unit students will be able to: 1. Explain different methods of knowledge acquisition and synthesis and the moral, ethical and legal responsibilities of scientific investigation; 2. Apply basic research concepts and methodology to an identified issue of interest within radiographic practice amenable to the application of such methodologies; 3. Develop an understanding of the practical, technical and management issues associated with the design and conduct of a research project; 4. Identify ethical aspects of a research project; 5. Undertake the process of gaining Ethics Approval for a research project; 6. Critically review published literature related to the topic under investigation; 7. Construct a minor thesis and, in the process, demonstrate competent written communication skills; 8. Communicate research findings to peers and professional colleagues and, in the process, demonstrate sound oral communication skills; 9. Demonstrate a capacity to extend the critical, ethical and creative stance to the clinical setting; 10. Demonstrate information and technological literacy skills.

Assessment: Ethics Report (500 words) 10% + Research Plan (1,000 words) 10% + Reflective Research Diary (10%) + Oral Presentation (15%) + Scientific Paper (55%)

Prerequisites: Successful completion of the Graduate Diploma in Advanced Radiographic Practice and MFM2006R or equivalent.
