Synopsis: This unit examines the APS Code of Ethics and the application of it professional practice and to the conduct of research. Federal and State legistation relevant to organisational psychologists, such as the Psychologists Registration Acts, Crimes Act, Family Law Act, Mental Health Act, Interpretation of Legislation Act, and the Occupational Health and Safety and Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action legislation are also examined. The third component of the unit reviews the roles and functions of industrial and other tribunals and union and employer bodies in relation to the goals and implemenation of the preceding legislation.
Objectives: On completion of this unit it is expected that students will: 1. understand the role of ethics in maintaining the integrity of psychology; 2. be aware of potential areas of conflict between practice and the law; 3. understand criteria for membership of the APS and the College of Organisational Psychology and for registration as a psychologist in Victoria. 4. become familiar with ethical principles and philosophies relevant to psychological practice; 5. become familiar with relevant professional codes and legislation and their application; 6. be able to identify ethical dilemmas that are common to organisational psychologists and generate possible strategies for avoiding ethical misconduct; 7. become familiar with ethical decision-making models; 8. understand the correct procedures for undertaking research and reporting results in the organisational context; 9. be aware of psychological interventions which may be unethical without the right safeguards (e.g., psychological services on the internet). 10. be aware of ethical issues associated with particular groups (e.g., military) or specialist areas of organisational psychology (e.g., equal opportunity and affirmative action, occupational health and safety).
