Synopsis: The unit expands upon the basic networking concepts taught in MMS1601 or MMS2601 and applies them to a high-speed, multimedia network environment. Various multimedia networks are introduced, such as Cable, Satellite, Interactive and Web Television, Video Telephony and Teleconferencing. The high-speed infrastructure that delivers multimedia material, such as ATM, ADSL and VDSL networks are also discussed. The various compression techniques that can be used to deliver audio, video, imagery and textual information across this infrastructure are also explored. Students are also introduced to advanced Internet topics such as Internet Telephony, ARP, QoS, Routing Algorithms, IPv6 and IPv4.

Assessment: Assignments: 40% There will be two assignments, to test all objectives. Examination: 60% (2 hours), testing all objectives.

Contact Hours: 2 hours lecture and 2 hours tutorial per week, 8 hours per week self-directed study.

Prerequisites: MMS1601 or MMS2601 (or equivalent)
