Counselling techniques for members of the teaching profession ( 12 points, SCA Band 1, 0.250 EFTSL)

Synopsis: On completion of this unit students will have acquired a knowledge of practical counselling skills and had some experience in practicing them. They will also learn about the phases of change which individuals go through in the process of first becoming aware of a problem to its resolution. Since the counselling of students raises questions related to development, students will gain some knowledge of personality development and how different personal styles affect counselling.

Objectives: On completion of this unit students will: 1. have gained an understanding of the problem solving model of counselling; 2. become trained in and able to use a variety of micro-skills; 3. be abe to counsel individual students with life difficulties; 4. have gained some knowledge of how to use other professionals to help the counselling process; 5. be able to work with significant people in the student's life to achieve counselling goals and to recognise when this strategy should and should not be employed; 6. understand aspects of personality development which are relevant to the counselling issues of students; 7. have learnt some techniques which people can use to feel less anxious and modify their perceptions of themselves.

Assessment: A class presentation of a case including an analysis of the theoretical issues raised by the case + An outline of suitable counselling strategies and an account of the phases of change observed in the case + An essay in which an aspect of counselling theory will be presented and related to case material

Prerequisites: MHT0001, MHT0002
