Synopsis: This unit addresses the diagnosis, classification and treatment of personality disorders. Emphasis is on the management of individuals with those personality disorders most likely to be associated with high levels of disability or maldaptive responses, i.e, paranoid, antisocial and borderline personality disorders.

Objectives: By the end of the unit candidates will: 1. identify and define the spectrum of personality disorders and be able to classify them according to definitions (DSMIV and ICD10); 2. appreciate the disability and social cost associated with personality disorders; 3. understand the management strategies employed to manage patients with a personality disorder; 4. appreciate the co-morbidity associated with these disorders.
