Synopsis: The ways in which cultural values are expressed in social behaviour and the communication process, including non-verbal cues, in different societies and in cross-cultural contexts. The relevance of culture to management practices is analysed and then illustrated in several national settings: Australia, Japan, China, Malaysia and India. Problems of cross-cultural communication in relation to gender issues in the workplace and ethical issues in business operations. The impact of globalisation and of consumer cultures on the cross-cultural communication process. The negotiating process and cross-cultural factors which affect international business regulations.
Assessment: Written research essay (3000 words): 30% + Group presentation and write-up (maximum 1000 words): 20% + Examination (3 hours): 50%
Contact Hours: 3-hour class per week
