Contemporary issues in health professional education ( 12 points, SCA Band 0, 0.250 EFTSL)

Synopsis: This unit will enable participants to analyse trends in health professional education and identify drivers and barriers to change (e.g. theoretical, political, social and historical). Participants will critically evaluate innovations in their own disciplines but will also be expected to distil best practice from other health professional groups and examine its appropriateness for their own teaching context.

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit participants will be equipped to: 1. identify major trends in health professional education in their own and other related disciplines; 2. examine barriers and drivers to change and educational innovation; 3. justify the inclusion or exclusion of innovations in educational practice in own teaching practice; 4. select one area of contemporary health professional education and explore its impact in depth in at least two disciplinary groups; 5. be able to describe contemporary policy issues, political and regulatory frameworks that govern educational provision in health in participants own context; 6. design curricular using modern instructional methods that are fit for purpose; 7. develop advanced practical teaching skills to facilitate contemporary education relevant to own practice.

Assessment: Advanced teaching practice delivery and written teaching plan (30 minute practical presentation and 1,000-1,500 word plan) 30%, Written assignment (2,500-3,000 words) 40%, and Electronic Portfolio 30%.
