Clayton First semester 2005 (Day)
Synopsis: In this unit participants will have the opportunity to explore the theoretical underpinnings of their teaching. They will be assessed and given feedback on their teaching performance. Participants will explore the interface between teaching and learning and discuss critically their roles as health professional teachers. Participants will learn about curriculum development and through analysis of successful innovations will distill best practice for the health profession.
Objectives: On completion of this unit, students will have the opportunity to: - Plan teaching and learning for a variety of contexts demonstrating student-centred principles including preparation of: learning objectives, teaching resources, aligned objectives, instructional methods and student outcomes; - Demonstrate competence as a teacher and the ability to reflect constructively on own skill and that of others; - Compare and contrast individual perspectives on teaching, learning and learning styeles with a range of theoretical models; - Apply the principles of curriculum development, recognizing the particular challenges of the health professional context; - Analyse a range of contemporary issues in health professional education with particular reference to the application of adult learning principles, learning styles, flexible delivery and the potential for information technology; - Determine the role of professional regulation and analyse its impact on course development, delivery and quality assurance; - Compare different educational approaches of various health professions and consider strengths and weaknesses in relation to own teaching practice.
Assessment: Teaching practical and plan 40% Analytical paper 30% Electronic portfolio 30%
Contact Hours: The face-to-face component of the unit will be organized in five separate study days commencing at 0900 and finishing at 1630.
