Synopsis: UNCLOS III - History of Negotiation; Regime implementation; Maritime boundaries; territorial demarcation - Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ); Living Marine Resource Management - fisheries; straddling stocks; Environmental protection - point-source pollution; Non-living Marine Resource Management - Oil and gas; off-shore drilling; artificial islands and installations; the Deep Sea Bed Authority; International Dispute Settlement; International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS).

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this subject, students will have developed: (a) a coherent, critical and historically informed understanding of current international law principles and rules for management of marine resources; (b) a well developed ability to use these principles and rules in simulated situations of interstate claims, conflict and dispute settlement; (c) a well developed understanding of the political, economic, cultural and other contexts for rule evolution and current use; (d) a well developed understanding of the strategic implications of this aspect of international law for Australia; (e) a broad understanding of the role and use of diplomatic conferences in the progressive development of the international law of the sea; and (f) a broad understanding of trajectories for further evolution of these principles and rules.

Assessment: Research assignments (4 x 1000 words): 4 x 10% + Take home examination: 60%
