Synopsis: An introduction to the contemporary Korean language, especially spoken language. Students are also introduced to written Korean and the Korean alphabet.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students will: 1. Be able to speak and comprehend enough to satisfy all survival needs, such as describing things, comparing, asking and talking about family, wishes and ability, requesting, agreeing and refusing, and asking and talking about past and future events. 2. Be able to read and write in defined contexts. 3. Have a basic knowledge of some aspects of Korean culture and society.

Assessment: Continuous assessment (oral and written class work, homework, tests): 60% + Examination (4 hours): 40%

Contact Hours: 4 hours (2 x 1 hour of lectures and 2 x 1 hour tutorials) per week
