Synopsis: On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to research complex events and issues with the perceptiveness, scepticism and persistence necessary to uncover hidden facts to enlighten readers, listeners or viewers and enhance their understanding of the underlying causes, current implications and possible outcomes. They will be skilled in communicating their understanding of society, its undercurrents, and the ways in which governments and other institutions operate.

Objectives: Students who successfully complete this unit should be able to demonstrate: 1. Advanced research skills applicable to journalism theory and practice 2. A capacity for critical thought and analysis of complex current and historical events 3. Perception, scepticism, and the persistence to investigate public affairs 4. Understanding of socio-political structures and forces 5. Ability to apply journalistic skills to impart important public information

Assessment: Seminar paper (2000 words): 25% + Proposal for a media production (audio, video, multimedia or text as a result of class-based workshops): 25% + Major exercise in investigative journalism on topic of student's choice (5000 words) or equivalent in an electronic format (audio 30 minutes, video 20 minutes, multimedia): 50%

Prerequisites: First degree with a major in journalism or permission.
