Synopsis: This unit is designed to enable students to understand the science-based discovery process through the exposure of various research disciplines and approaches. This unit will introduce an overview of the scientific research process and quantitative research methods, Basic Probability Theory and Probability Distributions, Hypothesis testing, Estimation and Experimental Design, Deductive and Inductive Methods, Logic and symbolic data, Automated reasoning, Model building, Optimization and Simulation techniques.
Assessment: Assignment: 50% + Tutorial participation and presentation: 30% + Numerical exercises: 20%
Contact Hours: 2-hour lecture and 1-hour tutorial/practical per week
Prerequisites: Admission into Masters course. A sound understanding of IT principles and IT related issues.
