Synopsis: The unit will consist of two sections: (i) Level 5 Language (80%) and (ii) Year 1 Culture (20%). Language: practical language acquisition through oral practice and the use of contemporary written, aural and audiovisual materials representing selected situations and registers. Culture: brief introduction to contemporary Italian social and political history and culture.

Objectives: Upon completion of these units students should further develop the four macro skills with specific emphasis on reading and writing, and an informed knowledge of contemporary Italian society in its constant change. In the language component, students are expected to consolidate and expand their knowledge of basic grammatical concepts and vocabulary. They are also expected to reach communicative competence on most topics relating to oneself, one's family, home, school, work and social environment. From the first cultural component, students should have acquired an overview to key aspects of contemporary Italian culture and society.

Assessment: Mid-semester Specialized Culture Assignment 1 (1000 words) in English or in Italian 15% + End-of-semester Specialized Culture Assignment 2 (1000 words) in English or in Italian 15% + Continuous assessment (class work, vocab and grammar tests and homework exercises): Equivalent of 1500 words in English 35% + Examination Equivalent of (1000 words) in English 35%

Contact Hours: 5 hours (1 hour culture lecture and 4 hours language workshops) per week

Prerequisites: VCE in Italian scoring 31 or above or equivalent
