Synopsis:

Objectives: By the end of this subject, students should be able to 1. Develop and apply a framework for comparing health care systems in terms of the various structural, organisational, and financial arrangements that may apply 2. Compare the health care expenditure of different countries in terms of percentage of GDP spent on health 3. Appraise the strengths and limitations of percentage of GDP as a measure of health care expenditure 4. Demonstrate an understanding of the structure and organisation of the Australian health care system 5. Become familiar with the public and private health care funding arrangements in Australia 6. Appreciate the roles of equity, efficiency and resource scarcity in health care and analyse issues associated with health care resource allocation 7. Consider the factors that have lead to increased interest in health care quality of care measurement 8. Understand some current methods for measuring quality of care and their strengths and limitations 9. Analyse the general characteristics of and influences on health policy 10. Demonstrate an understanding of common indicators of population health status 11. Compare the health status of different populations both within Australia and internationally 12. Compare a range of national and international health care reform initiatives 13. Appreciate the elements of Australian society that impact on the delivery of health care and the creation of health policy 14. Consider the elements of Australian society that have helped to shape the Australian health care system 15. Analyse the changing nature of Australian society
