Synopsis: Good governance is the basic building block for development and is the largest of the aid program's sectors. This unit introduces students to the key elements of planning, promoting and managing good governance in international aid and development programs and projects. It considers issues and approaches to governance programs and activities that promote open and efficient markets; enhance competition; combat corruption; secure property rights and the rule of law; protect human rights; and encourage civil society participation.
Objectives: Students will understand the issues and principles of good governance in international and sustainable development; demonstrate practical knowledge of a range of approaches to good governance in international and sustainable development; apply a range of professional skills in the design and implementation of governance mechanisms in development programs.
Assessment: Reflective essay 3000 words 25%, Governance strategy 6000 words 75%
Contact Hours: Five eight-hour modules
Prerequisites: Enrolment in the Graduate Certificate in IDEA (Program for organisational clients of Monash International)
