Clayton Second semester 2005 (Day)
Synopsis: Environmental and socio-cultural implications of economic and political transformations in the regions surrounding Australia. Explores the interlinkages between agriculture, urbanisation, gender dimensions of industrialisation, and varied outcomes of transnational finance and investment in countries of the region. Issues include: economic strategies and development from colonial times to the present, ecological dimensions of development strategies, extended metropolitan growth and mega-city formation, nationalism and democracy.
Assessment: Tutorial presentation (20-25mins): 30% + Country/Region research reports (3,500 words): 40% + Final examination (2 hours): 30%
