Synopsis: This unit introduces students to the issues, theory and practice of sustainable development and natural resources management. Topics covered include: Conceptualising Sustainable Development; Political Ecology of Property Regimes and Natural Resources; Field-Based Practice; and Sustainability and Institutional Practice.

Objectives: Students will understand a wide range of issues and conflicts associated with natural resources management and sustainability; employ a range of analytical frameworks for understanding the links between political economy of development and ecological change; research and analyse the environmental, social and economic sustainability of development projects; understand and have a critical appreciation of alternative approaches to sustainable development.

Assessment: Reading diary 3000 words 25%, Analytical essay 6000 words 75%
