Synopsis: The unit focuses on the period 1933-1945. Major topics covered include Jewish life in the interwar period, anti-Semitism, the Nazi State, the ghettos and the Jewish Councils, the Einsatzgruppen, the functionalist and the intentionalist debate, the camp system, resistance, non-Jewish responses in occupied Europe and the allied governments. The unit deals also with Genocide in History, gender and the Holocaust and the fate of the gypsies.

Objectives: Students will be expected to develop understanding of the events leading to the Holocaust, the course of the Holocaust during World War II and its subsequent representation. Students completing the subject will have knowledge of: the development and context of Nazi anti-semitism; the ghettos and the Jewish Councils; the einsatzgruppen; the concentration and extermination camps; Jewish resistance; non-Jewish responses in occupied Europe; the actions of the allied governments and of the papacy; and the fate of non-Jewish minorities under Nazi rule, including the fate of the Roma and Sinti peoples (the gypsies). Students completing the subject will have understanding of key issues of historical interpretation, including the functionalist and the intentionalist debate.

Assessment: Participation in class: 10% + Short essay (1000 words): 20% + Long essay (2500 words): 40% + Exam (1000 words equivalent): 30%
